As a part of the school district’s efforts to ensure that all students become successful readers, the English/language arts teachers at Greene County Middle School challenged students to read as many books as they could complete during the first trimester of the 2013-14 school year. Teachers are pleased to report that the students of GCMS accepted this challenge and completed 1,322 books during the first trimester, which ended Nov. 15.
In addition to asking each student to read 20-30 minutes outside of school every day, a portion of each class period was also devoted to free reading. Students selected books to read from a school collection; when completed, a short computer-generated quiz was given to ensure accountability in reporting.
Mrs. Tammy Brophy reported that 542 books were completed by the 7th grade class. With 82 students in the class, that averaged 6.6 books read per student.
The eighth grade records kept by Mrs. Tammy Mohr showed a total of 780 books completed by 111 students, an average of 7.0 books read per student.
Collectively, 193 GCMS students completed 1322 books, for an average of 6.8 books per student.
“Congratulations to our outstanding readers and teachers on their excellent accomplishment,” middle school principal Shawn Zanders said.
